Latex is a substance often used as a back coating on fabrics to make them easier to upholster. It is a milky white liquid that is extracted from the rubber tree, milkweed plant, or the poppy family. Tapestry is a heavy, flat-woven fabric features elaborate designs appropriate for various uses throughout the home. Cotton is best ironed when the fabric is damp. Polyester is a manufactured fiber that is resistant to stretching and shrinking. It is also quick drying, wrinkle resistant, and strong. There are many different choices for upholstery fabric. Full grain leather is a top grain leather with all its natural texture (grain) intact. Widely used for upholstery, drapery and garments. Rayon is a manufactured fiber composed of regenerated cellulose which is processed from wood pulp. Rayon is characterized by it high absorbency, soft hand, and drapability. It can imitate the feel and texture of silk, wool, cotton, or linen. Polyurethane is a manmade organic polymer with high elongation and strength. Polyurethane is often used in elastic and plastic or vinyl like textiles. Boucle can be identified by its curled or looped surface, this material is heavier than many other upholstery fabrics. Microfiber upholstery fabric, which has increased in popularity over the years, is a blend of polyester and polyamide. Spandex is a manufactured fiber known for its high elasticity. While Chenille upholstery fabric is extremely cozy, it's also excellent at hiding dirt. Developed as an imitation silk, linen, and cotton, rayon is durable, yet wrinkles easily. Recent developments have made high-quality rayon very practical. Trevira is a manufactured fiber belonging to the polyester group of fibers. Trevira fabrics are durable, lightfast, and drape well. A special type of Trevira, Trevira CS, is inherently and permanently flame retardant. Silk is a delicate fabric and only suitable for adult areas, such as formal living rooms and must be professionally cleaned if soiled. Olefin is a good choice for furniture that will receive heavy wear; however, it lacks the pliability and movement that natural fibers offer. Leather is a very popular choice as an upholstery fabric, as it is delightfully soft yet resistant to spills and stains. Backing is a sprayed coating or another layer of fabric applied to the back of fabric. A backing may be needed to give the face fabric more body or to make it more appropriate for upholstery. Generally, wool is blended with a synthetic fiber to make it easier to clean and to reduce the possibility of felting the fibers (causing them to bond together until they resemble felt). Cotton is quite popular because like any natural fiber, it’s inherently strong and comfortable. Wool is obtained from sheep fleece and the term "virgin wool" denotes new, not recycled wool. For a slightly retro or timelessly Scottish look, tartan plaid is another superb choice for seat or couch coverings. Jacquard is an intricate fabric that features a variegated weave or multi-color pattern. Silk is so delicate that although it can be hand-washed it is best sent to the dry-cleaners. Acrylic is a synthetic fiber and was developed as imitation wool. Cotton can also be washed. Silk has a very soft hand and can be woven into nubby informal textures and shimmering paper-thin sheets. Color is the most important reason people choose an upholstery fabric, so make sure your color choice is appropriate. Acrylic fibers are also man made and include such brand names as Orlon, Acrilan, Dolan and Dralon. Jacquard's name comes from the type of weave used to produce the fabric. Cotton is a popular plant based fiber that is used extensively for many kinds of upholstery fabric.
